Are 216 traits in FIST: Ultra Edition not enough for you?

The dozens if not hundreds of traits located across a variety of third-party supplements for FIST insufficient for your needs?

Jealous of everyone in the FIST discord server posting cool traits?

Searching for a bit of extra random chaos for your game?

GOOD NEWS! YOUR SEARCH IS OVER! LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE

WHAT THIS IS

A form-fillable PDF that will give you the raw material to create an ULTRA TRAIT, which is like a normal trait for your FIST characters, except ULTRA.

There are over 114 TRILLION unique possibilities before you even have to put any creativity of your own into it. That's a whole lot, folks.

Grab a d4, a couple d6s, and a d8 (or use an online dice roller I guess), follow the instructions, fill in the boxes, then put your imagination to work.

HAVE SOME EXAMPLES

I put in 3 sample ULTRA TRAITS in the doc, both to fill some whitespace and to help spur some inspiration. Here's one of them:

TRAPPERKEEPER. The arms wing of Lisa Frank R&D has done it again. This combo vest and SMG uses nets to both protect your torso and to shoot at enemies, keeping them in place. Once, you can spend 1 WAR DIE to gain +1 ARMOR for every rooted enemy..
- net-shooting uzi (1d6-1 damage, hit targets can't move), net vest (+1 ARMOR), -1 TAC

Here's what I rolled up to get this one:

  • Flavor: 72 - over-engineered
  • Ability: frequency 7 - X per mission (12 - once ever), cost 3 - spend a WD to, kind 7 - boost something you can do this turn, effect equivalent 8 - ±1D6/±1
  • What it gives you: 18 - 2 item, 1 stat
    • Stat: 3 - attribute, 2 - -2, 2 - TACTICAL
    • Item 1: 5 - weapon
      • Size: 3 - light: 1D6 DAMAGE
      • Type: 4 - ranged coverage
      • Tag: 25 - no tag
      • Weirdness: 7 - root: -1 DAMAGE, target can't move
    • Item 2: 11 - armor
      • Modifier: 8 - +1
      • Body part: 4 - torso
  • Ultra Tokens: 1
    • Spent 1 to add 1 to tthe roll I made on the attribute modifier table, making it only -1 TAC

Rolling a weirdness for a weapon only happens half the time you get a weapon, so I leaned into that. I tried to think about how "root" could apply to both a ranged coverage weapon and an armor bonus. My first thought was vines, but since my flavor keyword was "over-engineered" I went for a rapid-fire net launcher that was also connected to an armor piece, figuring you could use the extra nets that will become bullets as armor. From there, the ability came easily enough, spending a WD to give me +1 to the armor for each enemy I'd hit with a net.

TIPS AND TRICKS

I tried to make the PDF as intuitive to use as possible. That said, I'm sure there are some places where I know what I mean, but you might not. I'll try to anticipate some of those, but if more arise, leave a comment.

On p.4, the "effect equivalent" tables might be hard to parse. The idea here is that if the target of your ability's effect would alter a roll (to do an action, deal damage, etc.), then you'd use the "ROLL EQUIVALENT" column. Use the other one if you're adjusting ARMOR, HP, or WAR DICE.

No, that's not a typo on p.5 - if lucky enough, you can end up with 3 stat adjustments if you roll 4-8 or 20-24 on the "ROLL FOR" table and then you roll a 6 on the "STAT TYPE" table. If that happens - again, lucky you! - there is no space to put a third stat increase, so just type two into one of the boxes. The form will keep track for you.

When it comes to building your item(s), the first thing you should do is check the radio button next to the type of item it is. So if your item category roll is an 8, before you start typing your results in the blue box in the ULTRA BAR, check the button in that box's header. When you choose one of those radio buttons, it will disable the fields for the other categories of items for that item.

If you've downloaded and read through CRAVAT, you'll notice that 7 of the weirdnesses for the weapons are from that. Good eye!

It helps when you're spending ULTRA TOKENS to go back to the pages where you checked those boxes, and uncheck them as you adjust your rolls, results, or take your pity +1 WAR DICE. When you adjust those rolls and results, you can just type the new info right into the boxes so it'll show up on the last page.

If for some reason what you type in a results box doesn't show up on the last page, try hitting the tab key or check then uncheck an ULTRA TOKEN? box.

FIST ULTRA RANDOM TRAIT GENERATOR is a tool for generating more TRAITS for FIST.

The PDF is 8 pages and has a layout that makes me think it's about to sell me a diet supplement. Everything is well organized and easy to read but there are A Lot Of Colors Happening at any given time. Also, this is a fillable PDF. You can type into it and the last page will take everything you typed into account and spit out a unique TRAIT. That's rad.

Contents-wise, this does exactly what it says it does. You'll need to fill in some context for what the generator spits out, but the generator has a wide range and even includes a prompt for that context. You could run a whole party of PCs with only TRAITs from the generator without it feeling samey.

Overall, this is a fantastic utility for FIST. It's both GM and player friendly, and it works fast while still being portable. I'd absolutely recommend it to groups that have FIST in their regular gaming rotation.

Additional Content:

STEROID

Once ever, you may inject the one working dose of your experimental serum and gain FOR equal to d6+FOR. This boost lasts for 10 minutes, after which your FOR is reset to 1 (before TRAIT bonuses and other effects are applied.)

+d6 HP, WEAPON: FAILED AEROSOL (d6 DAMAGE SPRAY)

Thanks for the review, and that's a rad trait. +1 itch point for you!

ghostlenin's work on this trait generator is fucking incredible. Sure, you have to put in a little creative work yourself to come up with the specific flavour of the final trait, but this generator provides the backbone, the skeleton for starting your own traits, and balances every part against one other in a way that makes the whole thing come together just right.

So far, I've used this five times and every time has been a fascinating experience. It's especially good for trying to figure out a replacement for a base game trait you're not fond of - I can't stand Centipede thematically, so I carefully crafted a new trait using this generator and replaced it for my party.

The doc is stylish, colourful and carefully laid out, and has automatic calculations if you open it in software that lets you fill it in properly. And holy shit, is it fun to roll all those dice.

SCALPEL (ULTRA TRAIT): In a freak detonation your arm was blown clean off at the shoulder, being replaced with a prototype robosurgeon arm. Once per encounter you can use the arm to gain a bonus 1D6 on a REFLEXIVE check that requires extreme precision. You can also detach it at the shoulder to throw at your enemies, though obviously you'll need to go and get it before you can use it again.

- ProtoSurgeon™ Arm (1d6+1 DAMAGE, thrown, hit targets drop everything they're holding), +1 WAR DIE, +2 FORCEFUL

Awesome. Please enjoy your +1 itch point!

TUBER (ULTRA TRAIT): You're genetically spliced with a mutated root vegetable. You may roll +CREATIVE to attune yourself with the specific makeup of the local dirt and take root, increasing your ARMOR by 1 until you choose to move again. Your thrown seed pods can drive their wartish roots into the flesh of enemies, rendering them immobile and allowing you to channel malicious psionic energy through the root network—at a cost.

- Mutant seed pod (1D6 DAMAGE, thrown, ROOT: -1 DAMAGE, target can't move, THORN: You can sacrifice HP to deal that much extra damage), Twisted root greaves (1 ARMOR), +1D6 HP, -1 REFLEXIVE
